Helen Levitt (Aug 31, 1913-Mar 29, 2009)

Helen Levitt was a genius, a pioneer of color photography who spent her life photographing New York City. Her work is pure poetry! I spent some time at Barnes and Noble yesterday, poring over her pictures...very moving. She is one of the photographers I admire most. I listened to an interview on NPR once that described her this way:

"Helen Levitt is considered "a photographer's photographer" -- little known by the public, but revered by fellow photographers. She has never sought fame, and she's intensely private. She doesn't enjoy talking about her life, and doesn't find it terribly interesting."

...which somehow makes her more heroic.
